University Bookstore


Mission:
As the bookstore for Western Kentucky University, our mission is to enhance the student learning experience by providing educational resources, student employment and intern opportunities, and to support the division and entire institution through revenue generation and the provision of literary and general office resource materials.

Strategic Initiative 1: Learning
Goal 1: Provide students with the opportunity to learn “real-life” employment skills through student employment and internships.

Strategic Initiative 2: Diversity
Goal 1: Hire and promote a diverse workforce, concentrating on both university employees and student
employees.
Goal 2: Participate in the annual College Preview and Transitions Day, geared toward recruiting minority students to the WKU campus.
Goal 3: Participate in the annual “Diversity Rocks” event by staffing a booth.
Goal 4: Maintain training that targets diversity sensitivity and cultural understanding by sending staff to WKU hosted training events.

Strategic Initiative 3: Leadership
Goal 1: Utilize the Staff Leadership Institute to develop the leadership skills of employees within the department.
Goal 2: Provide staff and students with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through outside programs, conferences, as budget permits.
Goal 3: Provide student employees with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills by offering Student Manager positions within the store.

Strategic Initiative 4: Collaboration

Goal 1: Collaborate with faculty through the Bookstore Advisory Committee.
Goal 2: Collaborate with multiple academic/administrative departments to create matching textbook scholarships, as budget permits.
Goal 3: Collaborate with multiple SACS departments to create promotional give-away prizes, as budget permits.
Goal 4: Collaborate with DUC staff to bring in added building security during tailgating events.
Goal 5: Collaborate with Parking and Transportation on bringing bicycles and scooters to campus through the bookstore and an off-campus partner provider.

Strategic Initiative 5: Excellence in Service and Operations
Goal 1: Evaluate the student use of the Textbook Reservation Program by evaluating student retention in the program.
Goal 2: Extend Textbook Reservation deliveries to added sites as determined by customer demand.
Goal 3: Participate in the “Student Watch” survey to study student textbook buying habits, if selected.
Goal 4: Evaluate the faculty usage of the TopNet integrated textbook request system to determine if changes are needed.
Goal 5: Plan space for the DUC Bookstore renovation to accommodate for campus community needs 10 years in the future.
Goal 6: Research bicycle usage on campus and partner with a local provider for sales, maintenance, repair and safety training.
Goal 7: Research providers for personal property insurance for students living in residence halls.
Goal 8: Develop an Ownesboro bookstore plan that will provide the necessary products and services, as in demand by the campus and community.

Strategic Initiative 6: Assessment
Goal 1: Financial – Evaluate and monitor expenditures to maximize net revenues. To be determined by year end net revenues. Director
Goal 2: Financial – Monitor and balance daily deposits to ensure there are no errors in reporting once deposits are posted to Banner. Error rate to be evaluated at year end by Senior Cash Office Supervisor.
Goal 3: Service – Once the “year long” textbook reservation program is implemented, monitor the increased enrollment of second semester freshman. Director and Assistant Director

Strategic Initiative 7: Resources
Goal 1: Continue to grow the textbook subsidy program to reduce the price of textbooks for students.

Strategic Initiative 8: Wellness
Goal 1: Encourage staff to participate in Health and Wellness programs offered by WKU, such as smoking cessation, physical activity and weight loss.

Strategic Initiative 9: Safety
Goal 1: Create a comprehensive, written security program dealing with internal/external theft that is supported by WKU Police and Legal Counsel.

Strategic Initiative 10: Technology
Goal 1: Continue to update and modify textbook reservation system and faculty textbook request systems in TopNet to better service customer needs.
Goal 2: Evaluate employee computer replacement program to ensure that bookstore employees have the necessary technology to succeed at their job.
